What to do?
“I’ve already applied to all three state schools and have been accepted. What do I do now?”
There are a few scholarships that you can start working on right now. There will be many more to work on in just a few weeks. In order to get ready for the onslaught of scholarship applications, there are a few things you can do right now.
Get a few letters of recommendation. Fill out the “Personal Information for Letter of Recommendation” form that can be found in the Counseling Office or downloaded by clicking on LETTER OF REC.
It’s not a bad idea to get a letter from a Counselor and two from Teachers that you have had sometime between freshman year and now. Some students will also get letters from coaches, employers and club advisers. It’s okay to have a bunch of letters…as long as you pay attention to the instructions on the application and don’t send in more than requested.
The other thing you can work on is making sure that you have an electronic copy of your personal statement. Most scholarships requiring an essay will ask the same thing. They will want to know more about you. By having an electronic version of your personal statement, you will be able to “tweak” it to fit just about any scholarship application.
That’s all for now. Don’t forget that we are having our Financial Aid Night on Wednesday, November 14th @ 6pm in Panther Hall!

An Update…Finally!
Okay. My original intention for creating this blog was to give students…and especially seniors…a chance to view my presentations at a later time if they needed to as a reference. What I didn’t plan on was just how great this current senior class would turn out to be. I know that this sounds like something a “counselor” would say but it is completely true.
When I first started working at Amphi, I was told that somewhere around 30% - 45% of our students go on to further their education. This seemed extremely low to me and I wished for nothing more than to have the opportunity to try and help change this statistic. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. We are currently looking at somewhere above 90% of our students going on to further their education and I have never been busier. I’m not saying this to complain but rather as a way to hopefully demonstrate where our students are currently at.
After giving the “senior” presentation to all of the World Lit classes this year, I have been consistently booked with visits from seniors. I receive an average of six emails a day…including weekends… from seniors with questions about colleges, scholarships, or personal statements. That’s another thing that’s different this year. All of the senior English teachers have our students working on personal statements! An essay that can possibly help students get into college and/or get scholarships is now REQUIRED!! This is not something that is typically seen….anywhere….and just goes to show that not only are our students investing more in their future, our entire culture at Amphi is changing.
So…instead of boring you further with my ramblings, here is a brief summary of what you should be expecting over the next few weeks.
--If you are applying to an in-state college, get your application in by Halloween at the latest. Sure you could wait until much later, but if you do you will not get accepted as quickly and may miss out on scholarship opportunities. I’ve already had a few students that were accepted and now they are going to be working on scholarships…instead of worrying for the next few months about whether or not they are going to be accepted.
--Apply to out of state schools too if the apps are available. If you have questions let me know.
--Apply to Pima if you are planning on going there next year. You could wait up until the first day of classes if you want…but I’m here to tell you that this is not what you want to do. Apply now, take your placement exams, and then in April I will take a few van loads of you down to the downtown campus for an early registration.
--There will be a few scholarships that you can work on now but the majority will be found starting in November and ending sometime in March. I will publish the “Panther Progress” as soon as we start getting more scholarships in the mail.
--Go to the Financial Aid Night on November 14th @ 6pm in Panther Hall.
--Never ever pay an application fee for a scholarship.
That should be enough to get you through the next few weeks. As always, if you have questions, please leave a comment or email me at bcorrigan@amphi.com.

1st Days of School
Just a few quick updates for the first two days of school.
Thursday will still be an early out day; however, we will be on a modified schedule so that students will be able to meet with all of their teachers. The actual schedule can be found on the Counseling website.
On Friday we are going to have an encore LINK Crew presentation for the freshmen. The presentation/orientation will take place during your 2nd and 3rd period classes. Each house might be doing some different type of modified schedule in the afternoon. Your teachers will be giving you that information on Thursday.
Don’t forget that you have the 1st ten days of school to change your schedule. If you change your lunch period or the time of day you leave, there will be a $2.50 charge for a new ID.

Financial Aid Update
Usually I wait until later in the year to talk about Financial Aid Scams but it looks like this is something that needs to be addressed sooner. I have had a number of students from all grade levels contacting me with questions about companies that have been contacting them in regards to financial aid. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER WHEN DEALING WITH FINANCIAL AID IS THAT THERE IS NEVER A FEE TO APPLY FOR IT!
Companies will contact you and say many different things to try and get your money. They will offer to help you fill out financial forms for a “small” fee. These are the same forms that are free to begin with and if you need help filling them out, we can help you for free. They will ask you to go to a “financial presentation” and want you to bring a parent and a checkbook. During the “presentation” they will usually ask for a large fee or for your parent to take out a life insurance policy and then borrow against it! Instead, you can go to the Amphi Financial Aid Night on November 14 @ 6pm in Panther Hall and get real financial aid updates and advice that will cost you and your family nothing! I had a student that paid $45 for a company to send her a list of scholarships. The company made photocopies from FastWeb and mailed them to her! This is free information that she paid $45 for!!!!
There are still many more examples out there and I will be posting updates throughout the year. The main thing to remember is that YOU DO NOT PAY A FEE FOR FINANCIAL AID. The counselors at Amphi are here to help you and please come see us if you have questions about financial aid or if you are be solicited by some shady financial aid company.
